Terry McGinnis’ origin as Batman is well documented in the animated series Batman Beyond, another version of it exists within the pages of his newest comic series, one which shows how Nightwing actually created the Batman of the future completely by accident. In a dark future of the DC Universe, Dick Grayson aka Nightwing surpasses Batman by joining the GTO (Gotham Terrorist Opression Unit). With the skills he learned from Batman, Dick quickly rises in the ranks and becomes one of the top authority figures in Gotham City. In this storyline, the GTO completely runs Gotham with an iron fist as they are well funded, are granted access to the most advanced technology, and have been given complete freedom to police the city however they see fit. While crime has gone down, the quality of life for regular citizens has declined as well, shattering Bruce Wayne's legacy as Batman and making Gotham even more miserable than it was before. Dick Grayson, however, believes in what the GTO are doing for the city and never hesitates to bring a criminal to justice no matter how small the charge -- except in one particularly fated instance.

Batman: Beyond The White Knight #2 by Sean Murphy with Dave Stewart, Dick Grayson catches someone being beaten to death by an assailant who he was told to look out for. The opening pages of the issue depict Dick pulling Terry McGinnis off of his victim, but instead of arresting him, he brings him to a limo where Derek Powers is waiting for him, the man who has funded the GTO and who is also the sole owner of Wayne Motors. When Dick found him, Terry was in the process of brutalizing the man who killed his father. While Dick stopped him before he killed the man, he also presented Terry with a more satisfying avenue for vengeance.

Fans learned in the first issue of this series, Terry McGinnis works with Derek Powers to retrieve hidden secrets from Bruce Wayne’s batcave, ones Powers hopes to steal and make a profit off of. After Powers’ acquisition of Wayne’s company, he hung Bruce out to dry when it came to light that he was Batman and Bruce was sent to prison because of his vigilantism. However, Powers wasn’t done ringing Bruce for everything that he was worth, so he recruited Terry McGinnis to break into the Batcave and steal a suit that even Batman was too scared to wear – the iconic Batman Beyond suit. If Nightwing had done his job as an officer of the law instead of as a minion of his billionaire boss, Terry McGinnis may never have become Batman. Now that Terry has the suit and is on his way to becoming Batman’s legitimate successor, he is one step closer to getting the revenge he so desperately craves. While Terry was shown brutally beating the man who killed his father, Derek Powers promised him that he would help him track down the people who hired that man to carry out the hit. Now that Terry has Batman's most dangerous batsuit, he has the means to make those people pay for what they did to his family. However, the only reason Terry was given that offer by Powers in the first place is that Dick Grayson delivered him to Powers, making Nightwing accidentally responsible for creating Batman Beyond’s titular hero.
