Colin Cantwell, the concept artist who designed iconic Star Wars vehicles such as the X-Wing and Death Star, has passed away at the age of 90. Cantwell began working with George Lucas on the production of Star War after receiving a second draft of the script. The concept artist created drawings and models of the ships that formed the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire's fleets. Even almost 45 years since it debuted in theatres on May 25th, 1977, Star Wars remains an influential piece of pop culture, with Lucas' tale of an eternal struggle between light and dark continuing to resonate and grow to this day, expanding beyond film into the realm of television. However, beyond Lucas's storytelling, audiences were also entranced by the film's visions of space travel and dogfighting, communicated through Cantwell's distinctive and easily recognizable designs. Born in 1932, Cantwell is responsible for designing many of the film's spacecraft, from the Rebel Alliance's X-Wing and Y-Wing starfighters, the Galactic Empire's TIE Fighters, Star Destroyers, and the infamous planet-killing Death Star, to even civilian craft like the T-16 Skyhopper that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) can be seen playing with a model of. As first reported by journalist Clayton Sandell, Cantwell sadly passed away on Saturday, May 21st, 2022 at the age of 90 years old. The concept artist is reported to have passed at his home in Colorado, following a long battle with dementia. Sierra Dall, Cantwell's longtime partner, later informed Newsy of the artist's death.

Despite not working on later films, Cantwell's work continued to influence the franchise, with one of his concept designs being featured in a deleted scene from Solo: A Star Wars Story. Named after the designer himself, the Cantwell-Class Arrestor Cruiser can be seen in a sequence that would have depicted the younger Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) disobeying orders during his time as an Imperial cadet, leading to a tribunal and his reassignment to Mimban. Cantwell's design was originally intended to be an Imperial carrier craft whose radar dishes would be powerful weapons capable of destroying enemy cruisers, but was discarded in favor of Cantwell's final Star Destroyer design. However, the artist's concept of the weaponized radar dishes would later be reused for the Death Star.

Cantwell's work on the Star Wars franchise can not be understated, as his work set the design principles of the franchise that continue to be upheld to this day through new designs introduced in series like The Mandalorian. Cantwell's designs not only worked perfectly with Lucas' real-world influences by applying and kitbashing various real-world fighter-plane aesthetics to Star Wars' spacecraft, but were created so that audiences could easily recognize which faction they belonged to. As Cantwell's designs, techniques and principles continue to shape Star Wars going forward, the artist will be remembered fondly by fans for the key part he played in help crafting a galaxy far far away.

Night Live Kyle Mooney Didn't Get A Goodbye

Four long-time Saturday Night Live cast members signed off after the season 47 finale, but of the quartet, only Kyle Mooney didn't a goodbye sketch. The finale of Saturday Night Live season 47 saw Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon and Kyle Mooney all sign off for the final time, but Mooney curiously didn't get a proper goodbye. While Davidson and McKinnon have been rumored off and on to be leaving soon for the last several SNL seasons, and Davidson confirmed a while back, it definitely came as a surprise to many when it was recently announced that all four would be exiting so quickly. Such a large cast loss will likely lead to one of SNL's famous rebuilding years, some of which have turned out well and others not so much.

Mooney joined the Saturday Night Live cast in 2013, being part of the roster for nearly a decade. That's nothing to scoff at, as many talented people failed to last even close to that long in the fast-paced world of SNL, including one-season SNL alum Robert Downey Jr. After such a long run, it was naturally assumed that Mooney would get some kind of memorable sendoff. Sadly, that wasn't the case. Instead, Saturday Night Live's season 47 finale saw Mooney participate in only two sketches, neither of which primarily featured his talents as the main cast member. The first was a combined 9 to 5 and Weekend at Bernie's parody, while the second promoted the virtues of older adults wearing pigtails. Mooney was good in both sketches, but fans of the SNL performer were left saddened by the fact that unlike fellow departing SNL cast Davidson, Bryant, and McKinnon, he didn't get any time in the solo spotlight. McKinnon, as she often does, was the main player in the cold opening, while Davidson and Bryant each got their time in the spotlight during the "Weekend Update" segment. The respectful nod was deserved by all three, but Mooney deserved just as much respect in his SNL sendoff. Unfortunately, as many viewers are assuming, it's likely Mooney was a bigger part of another pre-taped sketch that got cut from the finale for time. This has famously happened to Mooney many times over the years, annoying his supporters.

Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels, so the fact that his abilities have been seemingly overlooked so many times is a bit perplexing. Mooney has rarely been left out of episodes entirely over the course of his tenure but has often found what could have been his best material cut for time. Considering that this was his final episode, though, the fact that Mooney didn't get a showcase is even more upsetting. One factor may be that despite his comedic gifts, McKinnon, the often divisive Pete Davidson, and Bryant are all bigger stars than Mooney outside the Saturday Night Live bubble. McKinnon has starred in a number of movies like Ghostbusters and The Spy Who Dumped Me, while Davidson appeared in The Suicide Squad and The King of Staten Island. Bryant has also spent three seasons leading Hulu's Shrill. That's in contrast to Mooney, who outside of supporting roles and voiceover work, has mostly concentrated on his Saturday Night Live duties. He definitely should not be punished for that, but it was also likely harder for Michaels to justify cutting a McKinnon, Davidson, or Bryant sketch.
