Tamiflu, also known as oseltamivir, is an antiviral medication that works by preventing the influenza viruses types A and B from having any effect on the human body. Patients with flu symptoms that have not been present for more than two days who are candidates for treatment with Tamiflu are advised to contact their healthcare provider immediately. Patients who are at risk of exposure to influenza but do not already display any symptoms may also be given this drug as a preventative measure against the illness. Since Tamiflu is not an effective therapy for the common cold, it is important to research and find acceptable alternatives.

Tamiflu is recommended for the treatment of acute and/or uncomplicated conditions caused by influenza A and B infection in patients who are at least 2 weeks old and have been exhibiting symptoms for a period of less than 48 hours. Patients must have been symptomatic for at least 48 hours before starting treatment with Tamiflu. Patients one year of age and older who are receiving preventative treatment for influenza A or B are eligible to get Tamiflu.

Oral solution and capsules of Tamiflu can be used with or without food; however, the general tolerance of the medication is likely to be enhanced if it is taken in conjunction with meals. For adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older, the recommended oral dosage of Tamiflu to treat influenza is 75 mg two times a day (the equivalent of 12.5 mL of oral suspension two times a day) for a total of five days. This dosage is to be taken as one 75 mg capsule or as the equivalent of 12.5 mL of oral suspension two times a day.

Tamiflu is typically available in the following dosages: 30 mg, 45 mg, and 75 mg capsules. The recommended dosage for the oral suspension is 6 mg/ml.
